Domain Name Across Accounts

When managing domain names on our platform, it’s important to note that a domain name can only be verified on one account at a time. Here’s how the process works and what happens when a domain is added to multiple accounts.

How Domain Verification Works

  1. Adding a Domain to an Account

    • When you add a domain to an account and verify it, ownership of that domain is claimed for that account.

    • Verification is done through DNS records. Once the required DNS records are set and verified, the domain is marked as verified for that specific account.

  2. Adding the Same Domain to Another Account

    • If the same domain is added to a second account, nothing changes immediately. The domain remains verified on the first account until it is re-verified on the second account.

  3. Verification on the Second Account

    • When the DNS records are updated to match the verification requirements for the second account, the domain becomes verified on that new account.

    • As a result, the domain is removed from the first account, as verification now proves ownership for the second account.

Why Does This Happen?

Verification relies on DNS records, which are a key indicator of domain control. The ability to update and verify DNS records signifies ownership.

  • Whoever successfully verifies the DNS records last is assumed to be in control of the domain name.

  • This ensures that the domain name remains associated with the account that has the authority to manage it.

  • We don't want to allow customers to share a domain name across multiple free accounts to virtually increase the sending limits per account.

Key Points to Remember

  • A domain name can only be verified on one account at a time.

  • Adding a domain to multiple accounts does not cause any changes unless the DNS records are updated and verified for another account.

  • The account that most recently verifies the domain is considered to have ownership, and the domain will automatically be removed from any other accounts.
