Auto-Merge Duplicate Contacts During Bulk Imports
Auto-Merge Duplicate Contacts During Bulk Imports
Updated over a month ago

When managing a large number of contacts, avoiding duplicates is essential for keeping your database clean and efficient.

How Does auto merging Work?

By default, when you import a list of contacts, our system automatically detects and merges duplicate entries. If a contact in your import list shares the same email address or phone number as an existing contact in your database, the system updates the existing contact with the new information instead of creating a duplicate. This ensures a unified and up-to-date contact record.

Example:

• You already have a contact with the email [email protected] in your database.

• During an import, you upload a contact with the same email address but new details, such as a phone number.

• Instead of creating a second contact for Jane Doe, our system updates her existing record with the new phone number.

Disabling the Auto-Merge Feature

While this feature is enabled by default, you have the option to disable it during the import process. However, disabling it can lead to duplicate contacts in your database if you don’t have a unique identifier, such as an External ID, to map the imported contacts to existing ones.

When to Use Auto-Merge

  • Recommended: If your contact list doesn’t include an External ID or other unique identifier.

  • Optional: If you’re confident your data is already de-duplicated or you need to create separate entries intentionally.
